Please don't offer me the SM ADVANTAGE CARD

I do most of my shopping at SM Sta. Mesa and I really find it quite bothersome to be offered the "SM ADVANTAGE CARD".

Usually, before the cashier tells you how much your purchases are, they ask you two questions (like automatons):
Sir, meron na ba kayong SM Advantage?
Gusto niyo po ba ng SM Advantage?
Even before they ask me the question, I blurt out.
Wala. Ayaw.
The thing is, the SM Advantage Card is NOT A DISCOUNT CARD.  According to its website, the card is described:
SM Advantage is SM’s customer loyalty program that rewards members with points every time they shop in SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, SM Hypermarket and other SM retail establishments inside and outside SM Malls. The points can then be used to redeem practically anything sold in any of those stores.
Aside from reward points, SM Advantage also offers numerous members-only privileges such as exclusive sales, discounts and freebies both inside and outside SM Malls.
Now, the SM ADVANTAGE CARD is NOT FREE.  You, the loyal customer of SM, will have to PAY for the ADVANTAGE CARD.

Being offered the SM ADVANTAGE CARD every tine
at the cashier in SM is ANNOYING.

The SM ADVANTAGE CARD will allow you to accumulate reward points with every purchase and these reward points can be redeemed.

The problem is that it is rather difficult to find out when you can redeem your points.

I used to have an SM ADVANTAGE CARD and I accumulated so many points after a year's worth of groceries and shopping.

One time while paying for a couple of items, the Cashier told me that I should check if I could redeem my points.

So I went to the information desk smiling, thinking that I could get a discount or gift checks or whatever.  The first sign of trouble came when I approached the information desk and found that NO ONE WAS THERE.  Being rather pressed for time, I decided to try and check again with the SM INFORMATION DESK the next day since I would be back at SM to pick up a bed frame that I had bought.

When I arrived at SM the next day, I went straight to the information desk and this time someone was able to entertain my queries.  She swiped my card and after a few seconds, smilingly told me disappointing news:  "Sir, EXPIRED na po ang POINTS niyo."

Ouch!!

So, since then, I have refused the SM ADVANTAGE CARD.

  2. i agree with you pare.. pero you missed the ultimate reason.. its the information the sm is getting about what type of buyer are you.. eveytime u buy u swipe.. and they know the things that you buy, ur age, number, ur income (u filled a form), etc etc.. nextly fwd nila sa call center ang info mo.. targeted marketing, they are gonna call and offer things you like because kilala ka na nila.. so its more than just points.. sm will be gaining back 1000x.

  4. mga pare just bring every time your sm advantage card to earn points. You don't need to go to the information desk.Me? I just ask the cashier when i'm pa paying my items how much pts. I can redeem.. Then all my items is free of charge..Yun nga lang dapat syempre loyal customer ka to earn more points.. like me..ehe!Then I enjoy their new web site, www.smacdeals.com

  5. I think the SM advantage card is only feasible if you happen to accumulate points that would exceed the annual renewal fee. If so, masaya nga naman siya kasi meron talagang exclusive discounts sa mga sale. :)

Besides, you can always check your points online kasi meron naman silang website where you can register your card. :))

  8. May terms and Conditions kasi yan. Or pag redeem.

If you're about to present your card, sasabihin nilang "ay, sorry po, hindi na po pwede" I'm like being cheated! Ilang beses na nangyari sakin yun! They should educate their employees!

In the first place why is jere a need to renew the card??? Yearly??? Isang malaking kalokohan at panglalamang sa consumers. Let me share something. Sa America, pag namili ka sa isang shopping center like Sears kukunin nila phone number mo para automatic member ka no more of those membership card. So everytime bibili ka you earn points at kahit di ka frequent shopper any available points pwede mo na ma redeem. We got new windows for our home so we earned a lot of points we were able to remeed our points kaya we got a washer, dryer and cook top all are of top quality brand name. My point is dapat ang points di nag eexpire at talagang pakikinabangan. Twice na ko bumili ng fla5 screen sa SM and all I got was a bucket of jollibee plus earning points seem to be a pain in the ass. I know its apples and oranges, if u know what I mean. I am just sharing this pra ma realize nyo yang sm advantage na yan kalokohan kase every time mag renew ka 300 pesos??? Big bull crap!!!

  13. Every P200 will earn you 1 point to your SM advantage card which has redemption value of P1.00/1 point. In order to earn 300 points (equals P300) you have to purchase about P60,000.

Sa loob ng isang taon at naka P60,000 pesos purchase ka lang = 300 points = P300 redemption value, pero magbabayad kn ng membership fee for "RENEWAL" which is also equivalent to P300 pesos, ano ang ADVANTAGE DUN?

  14. Pare d mo lang talaga alam gamitin. You should have ask someone. The cost is 100 for 2 years very cheap. And if you are really an SM shopper sayang yung points that you should have earned. I just bought my new B&D coffee maker using 2900 SMAC points.

  16. i totaly agree,
it s close to a scam...
-they never ever advertise how to spend your points, already a big sign, even their site is not user friendly about how and where to use them.
-you get 1 point for 200 or 300 PHP spent, means u get a return of 1PHP every 200 or 300PHP, that s 0.5 or 0.3%, totaly ridiculous, remember BDO gets 7 to 20% interests on loans and american express card gives 1 to 2% cashback, uh uh...
-SM, how well, they surely are amongst the most expensive in Philippines,
let s take an exemple with appliances, Philips SCF870/23, a mixer and steamer for babies, 84€ in Europe, at SM 11 990 that s about 200€, then i could just remain in philippines, LG new aircon 2018 dual inverter 1.5HP, 41 890PHP at SM, 27 000PHP in appliances store in Glorieta, the difference is...stunning. So giving back 0.5% with a fidelity card is ridiculous.

i only buy at SM when i can t find what i want anywhere else, even lazada is sometimes cheaper, but there are too many greedy vendors there too.

it was a mistake to pay for that card, not twice.

thanks for ur post, it s comforting my opinion

  19. ShoeMart Advantage Card(SMAC) 5vyears while expired but SMAC prestige Card yearly expired. Have to maintain P120, 000.00 spent accross all SM affiliates. Unlike before SM prestige spent P150,000.00 for two year renewal.

  22. Ayala Malls are not competent as for shopping center because they don't have their own Supermarket and Department Store. Always depends from Metro Stores, Rustans Entity and other tenants. Ha. Ha. Ha!

  23. Sm Prestige are useless. Why because in Ace Hardware cannot avail the discount. Discount only for Ace Rewards Cardholder, Toy kingdom for Toy Kingdom Amazing Card(TKAC) for freebies and discount, Watson Card for Watsons outlets, Mom card for Baby Company. During 3 day sale cannot avail the Prestige Friday for extra 10‰ discount at Uniqlo Philippines and Watsons boutique. What a discrimination. Bad,, Worse, worst for 3 day sale. If I where Uniqlo Philippines and Watsons Boutique they have to close 24 hours during Prestige Friday. Because they don't participate during firday sale. He. He. He!
